How to Plan Your Kitchen Layout: A Step-by-Step Guide for Homeowners
Planning a kitchen layout is one of the most important decisions in any remodel project. Get it right and you'll have a functional, beautiful kitchen for decades. Get it wrong and you'll live with awkward cabinet gaps and wasted space every single day.
At USA Cabinets Outlet, we've helped hundreds of Texas homeowners, DIYers, and contractors plan their dream kitchens. This guide walks you through every step — from taking measurements to choosing the perfect cabinet configuration.
Step 1: Measure Your Kitchen Accurately
Before anything else, grab a tape measure and record:
- Full length of each wall, floor to ceiling
- Location of every window and door (distance from corners)
- Position of plumbing, gas lines, and electrical outlets
- Any soffits, vents, or ductwork that could affect cabinet height
Measure twice. A mistake of even half an inch can cause major problems when your cabinets arrive.
Step 2: Choose Your Kitchen Layout Style
There are five classic layouts:
- Galley: Two parallel cabinet runs — highly efficient, great for narrow kitchens
- L-Shape: Cabinets on two adjacent walls — the most popular layout for open-plan homes
- U-Shape: Three walls of cabinets — maximum storage, ideal for serious cooks
- One-Wall: All cabinets on a single wall — perfect for studio apartments or open lofts
- Island: Any layout plus a center island — adds prep space and a social focal point
Step 3: Apply the Kitchen Work Triangle
The kitchen work triangle places your refrigerator, sink, and stove in a triangle formation. For best results:
- Each side of the triangle: 4 to 9 feet
- Total perimeter: 13 to 26 feet
- No major traffic paths should cut through the triangle
Step 4: Plan Your Cabinet Zones
- Prep Zone: Counter space near the sink — base cabinets with drawers for utensils
- Cooking Zone: Around the stove — deep base cabinets and wall cabinets above for pots and pans
- Storage Zone: Pantry and tall cabinets for dry goods, appliances, and dishes
Step 5: Know Your Standard Cabinet Sizes
- Base cabinets: 34.5" tall, 24" deep, widths from 9" to 48"
- Wall cabinets: 12" deep, heights of 30", 36", or 42", widths from 9" to 48"
- Tall/pantry cabinets: 24" deep, 84" or 96" tall
Step 6: Add the Finishing Details
Once your main cabinet layout is set, don't forget:
- Filler strips to close gaps between cabinets and walls
- Crown moulding on top of wall cabinets for a high-end finish
- Blind corner cabinets to maximize corner storage
- Under-cabinet lighting for both function and ambiance
