Aspen is technically a hardwood but it is especially soft and works well for ornamental woodwork. Since aspen is so soft, it is not advised to use aspen in kitchen cabinets that bear a considerable amount of weight. Typically, cabinetmakers who prioritize durability will choose a hardwood that is sturdier.
